The deserted island of Samson was inhabited until the 1850's. Today all that remains of the former inhabitants is ruined cottages and ancient fields.

historic isles

The islands are steeped in history. Legend whispers that the Isles of Scilly is the last remnant of the sunken land of Lyonesse, and that this was Avalon to which the body of King Arthur was borne.

Text book history begins with the first visitors in 4000 BC during the Stone Age, when nomadic hunter-gatherers made an appearance. The islands have attracted many others over the centuries, including the Celts, who mined tin, and the Romans who exiled their convicts here. The Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and Normans followed. Other distinguished visitors included the Queen Mother on the Royal Yacht Britannia.

lighthouse

The 17th century lighthouse on St Agnes is the second oldest in Britain.

Commerce began in Victorian times when the flower trade was developed.

Tresco features two Civil War castles.

gig racing

There are many ancient burial sites, some barely earth mounds, others more distinguishable. The burial chambers on St Mary's date back to 2000BC.

Every year the islanders compete in the World Pilot Gig Championships, and are a formidable force.
